House Through the Red Gate, Allington

The fully glazed extension links two existing stone byres, reconnecting previously isolated elements to form a coherent whole dwelling with functional open plan living space and intimate connection to the private courtyard.

Intricately detailed exposed timberwork creates a contemporary internal aesthetic. The roof appears to float above lightweight timber columns which appear to levitate about the floor with thin steel plates. Concealed steel flitch plates held to stiffen the roof structure where needed, allowing the structural depth to be minimised. The LVL roof deck achieves a thin edged two way cantilever, projecting the roof out into the surrounding courtyard space.

Alterations to the existing building involved the removal of internal walls to allow the space to be reconfigured.

“The team at Giraffe are our ‘go-to’ for complex projects where sustainability, heritage and aesthetic values need to be balanced to ensure the highest level of design output. House Through a Red Gate was no exception, they remained fluid and responsive throughout the design and construction phases leading to not only to an increased footprint at planning but an end product that truly met the original design intentions. “
