Private Residence, Chippenham

The structural design for three entirely unique architect designed homes brought some complex engineering challenges, not least the design and detailing for a bespoke, exposed, architectural steel sway frame supporting vaulted ceilings through the open-plan, split-level dwelling. Steel sections were carefully selected to suit the architectural ambitions of the project, including tee sections for the primary portal frame members, flat plates and hollow sections for bracing members. Steel connection details become visual features as they are fully exposed.

Working closely with the client and contractor, a cost-effective solution for managing the sloping site was developed by adopting a precast concrete retaining wall solution which spans across the site, enabling the architect to take advantage of the changing levels with interior spaces designed for upside-down living.
