T Levels Refurbishment, Bridgewater & Taunton College, Taunton

T Levels are a brand-new qualification which follow GCSEs and are equivalent to 3 A levels. Launched in September 2020, Bridgewater & Taunton College needed to leverage their existing building stock to offer the additional space and facilities for this new curriculum.

We undertook a thorough visual and intrusive inspection of the existing steel, concrete and masonry structure to understand where spare capacity was available, enabling us to introduce an additional mezzanine level within the existing double height spaces, maximising the reuse of the existing structure to keep costs down and to reduce the embodied carbon footprint of the development.

A cost-effective and efficient design was essential, to enable the ambitions of the brief to be achieved within the fixed budget constraints.

Alterations were also specified to the existing straw bale structure in the ‘Hub’, to enable the creation of a larger conference and exhibition venue. Our understanding of low carbon building methods including straw bale construction enabled us to give confidence to the design and build team that the proposed structural alterations were achievable.
